The arms of Alexandrovs were assumed in the XVIII century and confirmed by a grant in 1836 (General Armorial, X, 50; see below).
“Alexandrov” is a frequent family name of patronymical origin. This particular family descends from Gavrila (Gabriel) Alexandrov, of the county of Karachev in the ancient Principality of Starodub, who was admitted to a noble service on a condition that he will provide himself with a gelding, a harquebus and a sabre. The family was represented in the Assemblies of Nobility of the Governorships of Ryazan, Oryol, Tula, and Moscow. The late Alexander D. Alexandrov, of the branch of Ryazan, was a prominent geometrist, member of the Academy of Sciences and in 1952-1964 also the Rector of the University of Leningrad. His posterity resides in St.Petersburg.
