This site's aim is to present a vivid image of Russian heraldry, and to provide the English-reading audience with reliable basic information on the armorial heritage and the current heraldic practice in Russia. So far a number of our sections is under construction, but we hope that the site may be already interesting and informative. Welcome to the Heraldic Russia!
ARMORIAL and GALLERIES:
Section: Vol.II: the Noble Families
Mr Rostropovich (of the City of St. Petersburg et al.)Author of the modern version and artist: Michael Medvedev, GHA[R]
These arms were designed for, and belong to, the famous cellist and conductor Mstislav L. Rostropovich KBE (Hon), his spouse Galina Vishnevskaya, and their daughters. The ancient noble family of Rostropovich originally flourished in Lithuania, then resided in the Lesser Poland and in XIX century was recognised as a Russian noble family. From the times immemorial the family belonged to the armorial clan “Bogoria” [alias “Bogoryja”]. The present version is based on the Bogoria arms but according to the Russian heraldic customs, supporters (chosen by the armigers) are added to denote the rank of “ancient noble”; a motto in Russian is added as well.
